Recycling changes on the way for city residents Milwaukee residents could see significant changes in the way they take out their trash in the next few years, a public works official said Tuesday. A city task force has recommended moving to "single-stream" recycling, meaning residents would no longer have to separate paper from plastic, glass and aluminum in their recycling carts, Preston Cole, operations director for the city Department of Public Works, told the Common Council's Public Works Committee. New technology would allow the city or a contractor to separate the materials, Cole said. That change would be phased in by 2014, as the city renegotiates its contracts with landfill and waste-hauling companies. The task force also backed a "pay-as-you-throw" policy, in which residents could choose different sizes of garbage carts and pay different rates for waste pickup, instead of the current system in which everyone has the same size cart and pays the same garbage fee, Cole said. The city already plans to start a pilot pay-as-you-throw program this summer in two neighborhoods, which have not been selected, he said.
Whitefish Bay hires agency for business marketing Whitefish Bay — The Whitefish Bay Business Improvement District has recommended hiring an agency, rather than an individual, to be the district's executive director. Freight Train of Milwaukee will take over if the Village Board approves a contract with the agency on Monday, Assistant Village Manager Matt Schuenke said Tuesday. The 2-year-old district initially was run by a marketing director, Jennifer Heise, who resigned last fall, Schuenke said.
Hines, others lobby for transit sales tax Milwaukee Common Council President Willie Hines Jr. joined business and labor leaders Tuesday in urging state lawmakers to approve legislation expanding the Southeastern Regional Transit Authority and authorizing a 0.5% Milwaukee County sales tax for transit. "The current financing strategy is obsolete and can no longer sustain our system," Hines said of property tax support for the Milwaukee County Transit System. "Our transit system is desperately in need of help." At a news conference in the City Hall Rotunda, two days before a hearing by the Assembly Transportation Committee, Greater Milwaukee Committee President Julia Taylor, construction trade union leader Lyle Balistreri, Milwaukee Area Technical College faculty union leader Michael Rosen and Milwaukee Area Workforce Investment Board Chairman John Kissinger said public transit is crucial to connect workers to jobs.

Robertson, the woman at the center of last month's quadruple homicide, gave birth prematurely in December to a son fathered by the same man who fathered the youngest son of Rachel M. Thompson, the woman Robertson is accused of fatally stabbing Feb. 26, according to newly released court documents. Robertson's son died a short time after birth, according to an affidavit filed Monday in support of a search warrant. Robertson stabbed Thompson and helped suffocate Thompson's 3- and 4-year-old sons early Feb. 26 but did not harm Thompson's youngest child, 2-month-old Maurice Visor Jr., according to a criminal complaint.
