September 1, 1928 - October 1989
Cudahy High School principal, Band and marching band teacher

The day it was announced that Mr. Lorenz had passed away, a part of myself died as well. Mr. Lorenz was a man who stood for many things. He was kind, generous, caring, and an overwhelming supporter of the well-built music program here at C.H.S.  In fact, Mr. Lorenz was the sole founder of that musical program. Also, he was one of the most influential founders of the Wisconsin State Music Association, Marching Band Competition.

Mr. Lorenz died just one day before this year's competition (which was held in Whitewater, Wisconsin). I will never forget that day for as long as I live. We couldn't practice outside because of the weather. It was about 40 degrees and raining. Not to mention the fact that a dear friend had gone.

I asked Mr. Dull if I could say a few things about Mr. Lorenz, and without hesitation he said yes. I told the band how I felt about the loss, and what it meant to Mr. Lorenz for us to go out on that field the next day, and for us to do our very best! The rookie freshmen and sophomores couldn't really understand why ALL us upperclassmen, and the directors, were crying.

The next day it seemed evident while we were practicing there was no chance of us even posing a threat to the other bands. We couldn't even march in a straight line, let alone play musically up to our abilities. Then something happened, somewhere between the practice field and the performance field. It was like an entity of some kind had entered our bodies. From the moment the starting gun fired until the closing ceremonies, we were the best, "most vital," and most powerful band of the day.

When we marched off that field and heard the dedication, we knew that Harry (Mr. Lorenz) was there with us. It was the only explanation for what had been accomplished. First Place . . . the best in the state! It was too good to be true. Was it just a coincidence? Or was Mr. Lorenz really there with us? Plus . . . it was also the first time in Cudahy's history that we took the championship. You decide.

May the memory of Harold F. Lorenz, and his spirit, live with all C.H.S. students; future, past, and present, forever . . .

Harold Lorenz was a special person -- an inspiration to all of us in the Cudahy High School Band. He took us from a place of mediocrity and raised us to a place that exuded quality and teamwork. I can still remember the day that the High School Band Competition was in Whitefish Bay. We, the Cudahy High School Band, walked onto that stage in the auditorium and we could hear the whispers from the WFB students and others questioning who we were and what we could do.
Mr. Lorenz raised his arms in preparation for the start of our first musical piece and when it was over the audience gave the Cudahy High School Band a standing ovation. It was awesome! (Class of '71)
