How to Plan an Affordable Class Reunion

A lack of infinite funds doesn't have to be the deal breaker in your class reunion planning efforts. Be creative and have fun - your former classmates will too.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

Step1
Ask around your hometown for classmates who may own bars, restaurants, hotels or other potential reunion venues. These people may be more than willing to offer a good deal for their own reunion.
Step2
Scour the area for the best deal. Many bars have large rooms available for a minimal fee.
Step3
Consider a casual picnic at a park or beach. Parks offer room to eat and drink, play games, socialize and lounge very inexpensively.
Step4
Reserve blocks of hotel rooms for out-of-town alumni. Ask for special group or event rates, and include the hotel information in the reunion invitation.
Step5
Think about approaching the school's administration offices to see if you can use the school's gymnasium or outdoor recreation area. Nostalgia will run rampant when alumni show up to party at their very own alma mater.
Step6
Research caterers in the area to get the best price for large functions. Focus on fun, easy finger foods, keg beer and inexpensive cocktails.

Tips & Warnings

  • Bring your own stereo or boom box instead of hiring a DJ. Collect modern CDs as well as favorites from your school years.
  • Pitch local businesses to provide door prizes and other awards. Businesses can advertise in the reunion invitation and event schedule in exchange for their donations.
  • Ask attendees to send an alumni history with their RSVPs, detailing their lives since graduation. Print up inexpensive memory albums with a then-and-now section on each student.

on 7/7/2008 My 10-year reunion is in 2 weeks. The biggest challenge for me was finding my class based on 10 year old contact information and getting people to commit. I found close to 150 people on Myspace.com and Facebook. For the other 250 I used their old addresses we got from the high school and cross-referenced them with people search service www.intelius.com. For under 20 bucks I bought a 24-Hour People Search Pass and was able to find most of the people left on my list. Super helpful.

Does anyone have any creative ideas for nametags? I thought it might be fun to list Marital Status, Kids?, occupation, Senior Quote, Post Senior Quote, that way people wouldn't have to have the same conversation OVER and OVER again. At the end of the event I could collect them and put together a book to distribute. Has anyone done something like that?

on 10/9/2006 Using a Professional Dj for the night is the best things to do - or have a Student that now Dj's, do the reunion (from that year)

on 11/22/2005 At our 30 year class reunion we did a oscar show. Naming the awards from famous people.eg Whoopie Goldburg funny girl award. We had 3 nominees and had another classmate present & read the nominees and then announce the winner (opened the envelope) The Marilyn Monroe or Lena Horne most beautiful classmate. Sexiest classmate. The Albert Einstein brainiac award. The Ossie Davis Ruby Dee longevity in marriage award(The award for this was the little bride & groom cake topper) . The Richard Pryor Funny man award (a clown) The Michael Jordan greatest sportsman award(a little sports statue @ the dollar store The incredible hulk award to the biggest guy and so on. It was a blast. The presenters each had a catagory. It was fabulous. I shopped garage sales and goodwill stores and found all the awards. Make up your own. Also for the deceased classmates we mounted a class picture on a wooden plaque and invited a family member of the deceased classmate to come for the presentation to take it home. On the botton was "Class of 71 we miss you" It was very nice. We lit candles and the best friend of the deceased person came up to give fond memories.

on 11/22/2005 We are having our reunion in our old high school gymnasium. We are having an auction, using products donated to us by local stores. We haven't decided yet whether to give the money to our old school, donate it to a local charity, or split it both ways. Either way, someone else will be profiting from our reunion.

on 11/22/2005 For part of our entertainment, we are the having current band from the high school where we graduated
come in and play songs such as
our fight song and alma mater.
There is no charge but we have set
money aside for them or else will pass the hat.
