Benny Goodman dies

Jazz great Benny Goodman dies on this day at age 77. Born to a poor Chicago family, Goodman became one of the first white jazz musicians to win a wide audience. A brilliant clarinet player, Goodman formed his own band in 1932 and influenced scores of later musicians.
